Debian Linux Server
Debian Overview
Debian Linux is a GNU open-source operating system. Known for a close adherence to Unix and free software philosophies, as well as a very long-running distribution, Debian Linux is a very popular operating system for dedicated hosting and colocation servers alike.
Distribution History
Debian Linux was first announced on August 16, 1993 by a student at Purdue University by the name of Ian Murdock. Ian named the Debian distribution by transposing his girlfriend (now wife's) first name (Debra) and his own first name to form "Debian", which has since grown to become one of the most popular distributions of Linux in server applications today.
Recent Server Spin-Offs
Known as a solid, stable operating system, Debian Linux has made a great dedicated server platform over the years, however such obsession over a solid server has meant a lack of frills. This has lead to a number of Linux distributions built upon Debian, such as Ubuntu server, which add features upon this dedicated base.
