Ubuntu Linux Servers
Ubuntu in Dedicated, Colocation, and VPS
Overview
Ubuntu Linux is a derivative of Debian which has recently become very popular. Although traditionally designed for desktop use, Ubuntu will work fantastically on any of our dedicated server or VPS offerings, as well as most colocation hardware.
History of Ubuntu
Ubuntu was first created in 2004, sponsored by a private South African company founded by an entrepreneur by the name of Mark Shuttleworth. The name Ubuntu embodies a Zulu / Xhosa concept which translates to mean "I am what I am because of who we all are." It is from this concept that Ubuntu's slogan - "Linux for Human Beings" was derived, and embodies the company's main goal of making Linux more widely available and easy to use.
Although still among the newest Linux distributions seen on desktop, server, or otherwise, Ubuntu has made huge waves since it's inception. Despite the massive head start that nearly all other Linux distributions have on Ubuntu; it is still one of the most popular Linux distributions available today.
Ubuntu Server Edition
Although traditionally designed for desktop use, Ubuntu recently released their server dedition - a version of Ubuntu that is very friendly to dedicated servers, colocation, or even a Virtuozzo VPS. Ubuntu server edition will support x86, AMD64 and UltraSPARC T1 architectures, making it a realistic choice for any variety of colocation hardware our clients can potentially acquire.
